Stage: Prototype
Licence: GNU General Public License v2
Verified on 4 November 2026 against README and v2.0.0.

Can it run DOOM? is a game module for Basecamp by the-cybermonk. It runs the DOOM engine as a sidebar tab inside the Basecamp shell. Its metadata.json lists no dependencies on other Logos modules.

What it does

  • It embeds the doomgeneric DOOM engine in a C++ backend and shows the game in a view written in QML, the language Basecamp uses to describe screens.
  • It bundles Freedoom, a free replacement for the original game data, so nothing else needs downloading. The original commercial game files are never bundled or used.
  • It finds its own game data at run time, so it works wherever Basecamp installs it.
  • It plays the engine's own sound effects and music through audio libraries bundled in the package.
  • According to the README it only plays sound and never records anything, though macOS may still show a microphone prompt, which can be denied.

Stage: Prototype. The README says "This is a personal, experimental hobby project. It is not an official Logos product."

Use it

  1. Download the package for the platform in use from the latest release: Can-it-run-DOOM.lgx for macOS or Can-it-run-DOOM-linux-x86_64.lgx for Linux.
  2. In Basecamp, open the Package Manager, choose Install from file and pick the package.
  3. Fully quit Basecamp and reopen it.
  4. Click the DOOM tab in the sidebar, then click the view to give it the keyboard. The first launch can take up to a minute.
  • The README says it needs a current Basecamp. On 0.1.2 or older the tab loads but the backend never starts.

Build it

  • It needs Nix with flakes, on macOS (Apple Silicon) or Linux.
  • nix run . starts the module in a standalone harness.
  • nix build '.#lgx-portable' --out-link result-lgx-portable makes the installable package.
  • The engine and the game data are in the repository. The README says a fresh clone builds offline.
