Issue 2/More Than Doctors and Lawyers
Parallel Education
Asked what they wanted to be, the students at Government Day Secondary School in Sabon Kaura gave the answers you might expect: doctors, lawyers, teachers, footballers, and soldiers. On 22 September, 12 members of Logos Circle / Bauchi went to the school, and seven of them, who work in healthcare, law, technology, academia, and social work, spoke to more than 100 students.
They started from the students’ answers and built outwards. Those who had only mentioned doctors and nurses began asking about pharmacy, physiotherapy, and radiography. The speakers explained which subjects and class combinations lead to which university courses, and one session encouraged the students to learn a practical skill alongside their schooling.
Around six students stayed behind afterwards to ask how they could keep in touch, and were given the Circle steward’s number. The deputy principal told the Circle that many of the students are capable and ambitious but lack proper guidance, and some of the teachers admitted they know little about newer careers themselves. Members also chipped in for a fully stocked first-aid box, which the school had known it needed but kept putting off.
Next time, the Circle wants more time and smaller groups organised by career interest, either at the same school or at a new one.
