Parallel Economy

In July, Logos Circle / Accra spent its meetup talking about financial literacy. In August, the Circle took that conversation out into the wider community.

On 15 August, 20 returning members ran an outreach on budgeting, saving, and making responsible decisions with money, and on how to spot a scam, from the warning signs of a fake investment, a fake job, an online offer, or a phishing message, to how to check an opportunity before handing over money or personal details.

According to the report, practical examples made the difference, and the main lesson of the day was that some fraudulent offers look legitimate, which makes checking the most useful habit to teach. As more of people’s money moves online, the Circle points out, financial literacy and digital safety have become closely connected.

Next up, the Circle is putting together a short scam-awareness guide that people can pass on, choosing a specific group to reach next, with students and young adults among the ideas, and setting itself a goal it can measure.
