Forumer
What it does: A private, serverless discussion forum for Logos Basecamp
Stage: Prototype
Licence: MIT or Apache-2.0, at the user's option
Verified on 4 November 2026 against README and v0.2.5.

Forumer is a forum app for Basecamp by bristinWild, forked from jzaki/forum-sample-app. Posts travel peer to peer over Logos Messaging, which the README calls Logos Delivery, and pictures in posts are stored in Logos Storage.

What it does

  • People post topics and replies with no central server, and accounts, the post log and unsent posts stay on the user's own device.
  • An account is a secret key on the device, protected by a password and backed up as a 24-word recovery phrase, with no email or phone number asked for.
  • Each post can go out under a persona, under an alias or fully anonymously, and personas can be kept, rotated by hand or rotated on every post.
  • Topics are tagged with up to three domains, users follow the domains they care about, and replies nest two levels deep.
  • Private forums are joined by invite link. The README says their posts are encrypted on the network with a key that only the link carries.
  • Up to four pictures can go with a post. By the README's account, they are stripped of metadata and encrypted before they are stored in Logos Storage.
  • Unsent posts wait in an outbox and are retried. A newcomer gets past posts from other peers and from the network's store nodes, which keep past messages.
  • Proof of work (a small computing cost on every post) and hourly limits per persona and per account keep the network from being flooded.

Stage: Prototype. The README gives its status as "working and in active development" and still describes v0.2.5 as a release candidate, though GitHub lists v0.2.5 as a full release. It also says "This is an independent community project. It has not been built for, on behalf of, or as part of the work of Logos or the Institute of Free Technology".

Use it

  1. In Basecamp, open Settings, then Package Repositories, and add https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bristinWild/forumer-catalog/main/logos-repo.json.
  2. Open Package Manager, then Social, then Forumer, and press Install. Open Forumer from the sidebar.
  3. Create an account with a name and password, and write down the 24-word recovery phrase.
  • The README says the catalogue serves v0.2.3. It points to v0.2.5-rc.1 on the releases page for use with a compatible patched Basecamp host, and a v0.2.5 release with Linux, macOS and Windows packages is also there.
  • Packages are built for macOS (Apple Silicon) and Linux (x86_64). Windows has passed cross-compilation but not a native Basecamp test.
  • If the download fails, the README suggests leaving the optional modules unticked, or installing the packages from file with lgpm. The packages are not signed yet, so lgpm needs the allow-unsigned option.
  • The README notes that image display needs a Basecamp image-provider change that is not yet in an official Basecamp release.

Build it

  • It needs Nix with flakes, on macOS (Apple Silicon) or Linux (x86_64 or arm64).
  • nix build -L builds the module and nix run starts Forumer in a standalone Basecamp window.
  • nix build .#lgx-portable makes a package for the Basecamp package manager.
  • ./scripts/test-core.sh runs the unit tests, and ./scripts/two-instances.sh starts two separate copies for an end-to-end test.

Releases

Latest tag: v0.2.5, 18 October 2026. The version in metadata.json is 0.2.5.
