Parallel Education

Maths and English are the subjects students in Katsina struggle with most, particularly in their secondary school exams. Over the summer, Logos Circle / Katsina hired four experienced teachers, two for each subject, for a three-week programme. The students sat a test before it began and another at the end, and on average their scores improved by around 60%.

Three weeks of teaching only helps the children who are in school. When the Circle met on 29 August to review the programme, the doctors, nurses, teachers, and youth advocates in the room kept coming back to the children who are out of school or close to dropping out because their families cannot pay.

For September, the Circle set itself a target it can check: a full year’s tuition for at least five of those children, and a conversation with their parents about keeping girls and boys in school. Members have already put in their own money and are looking to raise more!
