The creation of a parallel society is a form of non-violent civil resistance, where an organised group of people build parallel civil structures that work alongside harmful and unfair ones under which they live.

The concept comes from Czechoslovakian dissidents living under a totalitarian regime, where they were forced to create parallel institutions in law, education, media, infrastructure and culture to survive.

* [[Booth]]: broadcast a live stream from Basecamp over Logos Messaging, with no server or account. Prototype.
* [[Medusa]]: a self-custody privacy wallet for the Logos Execution Zone, run as a Basecamp module. Prototype.

A '''winnable issue''' is a clear, concrete local problem that a Logos Circle can act on and solve, chosen to bring a community together and build momentum towards bigger goals.

== The basics ==
The Circles handbook says organising "involves selecting a clear, concrete, winnable issue". The issue lets organisers mobilise a community, build solidarity and gain momentum.

The handbook places the idea within community organising, where "there is a concept known as an 'issue-cutting' or 'issue-based campaign' strategy." It quotes Saul Alinsky's ''Rules for Radicals'': "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." It also links to a Status note on Interaction Ritual Chains.

An issue is winnable when it:
* aligns with Logos values: decentralisation, privacy, open infrastructure and autonomy
* carries emotional weight for the people affected
* is tangible and achievable, so the Circle can act and see progress
* already has local roots, in people, groups or organisations working on it

The handbook's checklist asks four things. Is the issue clear enough to explain in one or two sentences? Does it move people to act? Can the Circle take concrete steps, with clear signs of success and a clear start and finish? Does it fit values such as decentralisation, transparency, privacy or mutual aid? "If you can check at least 80% of this list", it is likely a real winnable issue. If not, refine the problem or do more community listening.

The Circles Charter adds limits. "Every Circle is built around an initial, pre-defined winnable issue." It must be completable within three months, have visible local impact, be doable by volunteers and produce a measurable outcome. Its goal for the first Circle is to complete or materially deliver the winnable issue within 30 days of launch.

=== From problem to win ===
The handbook's pipeline has five steps:
# Community listening: ask what problems people see and what is missing.
# Cut the issue: "Choose a narrow, winnable target that targets part of the larger problem."
# Co-design with the local community: bring in partners and test the idea with the people affected.
# Prototype using Circle capabilities: build with the community and produce something visible, such as a working tool, a documented process or a public demonstration.
# Impact signal: track two or three simple measures, such as active participants or local adoption.

The Circles issue buckets page advises starting with one visible win, which it calls the '''First Action'''. It suggests a problem people recognise locally and a micro-action that can be done within a week. It sorts issues into eight buckets: Economy and Cost of Living, Housing, Healthcare, Welfare and Social Protection, Security and Crime, Infrastructure, Rule of Law and Institutions, and Education and Learning.

== How it applies to Logos ==
Winnable issues are the core of Logos Circles. The Logos movement page says "Logos Circles are self-organised groups solving winnable issues that matter locally" and "Local Circles are solving winnable issues every week."

Under the Circles Charter, Stewards design the Circle's first winnable issue during training and publish Circle reports. The Parallel Society Playbook asks Circles to write up the issues they solved, including why each one was winnable, so other Circles can adapt them. It says "Together, the issues we solve form the basis of a global parallel society."

The creation of a parallel society is a form of non-violent civil resistance, where an organised group of people build parallel civil structures that work alongside harmful and unfair ones under which they live.

The concept comes from Czechoslovakian dissidents living under a totalitarian regime, where they were forced to create parallel institutions in law, education, media, infrastructure and culture to survive.

== The basics ==
The Circles handbook says organising "involves selecting a clear, concrete, winnable issue". The issue lets organisers mobilise a community, build solidarity and gain momentum.

The handbook places the idea within community organising, where "there is a concept known as an 'issue-cutting' or 'issue-based campaign' strategy." It quotes Saul Alinsky's ''Rules for Radicals'': "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." It also links to a Status note on Interaction Ritual Chains.

An issue is winnable when it:
* aligns with Logos values: decentralisation, privacy, open infrastructure and autonomy
* carries emotional weight for the people affected
* is tangible and achievable, so the Circle can act and see progress
* already has local roots, in people, groups or organisations working on it

The handbook's checklist asks four things. Is the issue clear enough to explain in one or two sentences? Does it move people to act? Can the Circle take concrete steps, with clear signs of success and a clear start and finish? Does it fit values such as decentralisation, transparency, privacy or mutual aid? "If you can check at least 80% of this list", it is likely a real winnable issue. If not, refine the problem or do more community listening.

The Circles Charter adds limits. "Every Circle is built around an initial, pre-defined winnable issue." It must be completable within three months, have visible local impact, be doable by volunteers and produce a measurable outcome. Its goal for the first Circle is to complete or materially deliver the winnable issue within 30 days of launch.

The handbook's pipeline has five steps:
# Community listening: ask what problems people see and what is missing.
# Cut the issue: "Choose a narrow, winnable target that targets part of the larger problem."
# Co-design with the local community: bring in partners and test the idea with the people affected.
# Prototype using Circle capabilities: build with the community and produce something visible, such as a working tool, a documented process or a public demonstration.
# Impact signal: track two or three simple measures, such as active participants or local adoption.

The Circles issue buckets page advises starting with one visible win, which it calls the '''First Action'''. It suggests a problem people recognise locally and a micro-action that can be done within a week. It sorts issues into eight buckets: Economy and Cost of Living, Housing, Healthcare, Welfare and Social Protection, Security and Crime, Infrastructure, Rule of Law and Institutions, and Education and Learning.

== How it applies to Logos ==
Winnable issues are the core of Logos Circles. The Logos movement page says "Logos Circles are self-organised groups solving winnable issues that matter locally" and "Local Circles are solving winnable issues every week."

Under the Circles Charter, Stewards design the Circle's first winnable issue during training and publish Circle reports. The Parallel Society Playbook asks Circles to write up the issues they solved, including why each one was winnable, so other Circles can adapt them. It says "Together, the issues we solve form the basis of a global parallel society."

The pipeline page turns large problems into winnable ones:
* Dirty streets: a trash clean-up day.
* Youth unemployment: fundraising for a school's IT department.
* Food insecurity: setting up a food bank.

The creation of a parallel society is a form of non-violent civil resistance, where an organised group of people build parallel civil structures that work alongside harmful and unfair ones under which they live.

The concept comes from Czechoslovakian dissidents living under a totalitarian regime, where they were forced to create parallel institutions in law, education, media, infrastructure and culture to survive.
